Laurel's final evaluation

I think our final film turned out very well. I think we stuck to the brief and created a realistic film. I also think our match on action and 180 degree rule were strong and could be clearly seen by the audience. Our editing was good, and the shots were clear and consise making our film flow better, as well as cutting out the unnecissary shots  like seeing Jamie open and walk through every door. However I think that in a few shots our white balance was slighty off although we set it before shooting due to the lighting in the locations we used. The music we used complimented the film because it added tension and suspense while the student was running. We used paralell editing with the teacher's feet walking and the student running, this was good because it communicated to the audience that both events were happening at the same time and showed that time was passing.
I made sure we had used shot reverse shot correctly to show the teachers and the students facial expressions and reactions in their conversation. I think this worked well because it showed the contrast between the student and the teachers authority. Although the whole group took a role in making sure that the match on action, shot reverse shot and 180 degree were applied and not broken. I think as a group we applied these techniques well which made our film fairly good.

We used the 180 degree rule when shooting the conversation between the teacher and student.
We used match on action when the student was entering the exam room.
And finally we used shot reverse shot also during the conversation between the teacher and student.

Generally I think our project turned out very well, helped by how we worked well in a team to make sure everything was completly right and we had covered all the elements that we needed to.

Our finish project - Jamie, Laurel, Chris and Emma

Thursday, 20 January 2011

We have now finished our preliminary project, however even up to the last few moments we were still having to change things from our original plans. As we had to again move locations because of access, we had to think about how to keep the story making sense. We decided to ad a plain black shot saying 'ten minutes later' which tells the audience that time has past and that they will expect a change in location and setting.

We have also added diagetic sound of the student recieving the text message and non-diagetic music which adds to the suspence and tension of the sequence.

Storyboard

This is the first page of our storyboards which contains shots numbered 1-6. While we were drawing this we realised that our shots didn't make much sense so we had to re-draw them in a slightly different order therefore they read shots 1, 2, 4, 6, 3, 5. However they are numbered therefore it's not to hard to read. Once the editing process began we realised that we had run over the 1 minute time limit therefore we had to cut some shots. The shots we cut were numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6 from this sheet. The shots we did use however was a close up of the phone which was also an over the shoulder shot. We also used a medium long shot and pan as he ran towards the door.
The second page also had to have some shots cut because of the time limit and these were a couple of shots were we see the teachers feet walking around the exam. We kept a few in because we thought it was a  contrast between the student running and added more tension because it shows time passing by as the student becomes later and later. We did however keep the rest of the shots in, 8, 10 and 12 which showed the student running up and down stairs and corriors. We used a close up of the teachers feet walking and a tracking shot to keep up. While the student was running we mostly used medium long shots. When the student was running down the corridor by media (shot 10) we kept the camera still and showed him running to the end of the corridor. However when he was running up and down the stair we used a pan to show him turning round the corners to run up or down another flight of stairs or go down a corridor.
Also because we exceeded the time limit a lot of the shots from this sheet had to be cut (shots 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18) but although we cut scenes we still made sure that the story made sense. However we did show the student opening the doors and entering the exam room, which is where we used the match on action. We used a medium long shot as he opened the door outside the room and then cut to show him entering the room from inside. We then panned the camera to show him taking his seat.

As mentioned before we were well over the time limit and unfortunatly had to cut and merge these shots together to reduce the time of our sequence. Also we realised while drawing our storyboard that our story didn't make sense so we had to add a few more to make sure people could understand what was happening. This part of the storyboards contains shots 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 27, all of which had to be erased from the final film.
This is our final sheet of story board containing the missing shots from the previous sheet, (shots 24, 25 and 26). These shots show the conversation between the student and the teacher about why they were late. We also changed the dialogue we used to reduce time to:

Teacher: Well...?
Student: I'm Sorry

We did this to reduce time, create the tension showing the trouble the student was in. During this sequence we applied the 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot to show the reactions and facial expressions of the characters within the scene. To do this we used over the shoulder shots, eye level for both character so we could read their facial expressions. For these shots we also had to change the location due to the location we wanted to use not being free the times we wanted to film.

Editing

We have also begun to edit the shot we have filmed due to not being able to film for a number of reasons. Now we have discovered that a couple of our individual shots don't quite match up to one another therefore they need to be re-filmed. We have also discovered that in total our sequence is longer than our specified 1 minute time limit. Therefore we are going to have to compromise some of our shots to work within this time and possibly have to re-think bits of the sequence and storyline in order to meet the task requirements. To do this we also think we will need to re-storyboard shots within the sequences. We are also beginning to think about sound effects and music that we may use in the background.

Fliming

We have been filming our shots over about 2 hours and have nearly finished. We have been filming Jamie running down the corridors and stairs and have filmed a couple of shots within the exam room. Once we started filming we discovered that one of the locations we wanted to use wasn't easily accessed due to it being in constant use. Therefore we have had to adapt and alter our location slightly, where instead of using the Hub to film our exam shots, we have used the pod.

Towards the end of our shooting, we only haveto conversation between the student and teacher to film, the Pod wasn' t free for us to film in. Therefore we again had to alter our locations. We decided to move the scene into a classroom, to represent the teachers office, showing that the teacher had more authority than the student did.

Costumes, Hair and Make up

Costumes
Jamie is going to be wearing a blue shirt, jeans and trainers throughout the shot.
Laurel is going to be wearing a black skirt, white blouse, black blazer and high heels.

Hair/Make up
All members of the cast will have natural looking hair and make up because it is set in a school/college and therefore they wouldn't be over the top and we want to keep the sequence looking realistic.

We have made notes on these and kept them simple in order to make sure that the shots match up and keep the scenario looking realistic.
